Dark Circles and Hollows
Discoloration and hollows that appear around the eyes can occur very early in life if its hereditary in nature. It can be a general darkening (grey or brown hues) of the area around the eyes or it can be focused just beneath the eyes. Hollowing beneath the eyes tends to make the discolouration worse.
Causes
Dark circles can be due to genetics where a darker skin tone around the eyes is observed very early on. It can also be due to anatomical make up of superficial veins causing a darker tinge to the thin skin around the eyes. Melasma can also cause dark circles, which is aggravated by estrogen surge of puberty/pregnancy or sun exposure. External factors like skin allergies can also contribute to dark eye circles. The hollowing around the eyes is usually due to gradual loss of volume and skin elasticity due to the aging process.
Prevention and Treatment
Sun protection is important like wearing a hat or sunglasses and putting on a good sunscreen.
