Botox Vancouver: What Is Botox?
Botox is a muscle relaxing agent that is injected into the muscles to make muscles appear less bulky and less tense which in effect helps soften the lines of expression.
Humans have the unique ability to show expressions on our faces. This is a necessary and essential feature that helps us communicate with each other. The constant use of our muscles of expression will show as superficial faint lines on our skin initially and become more deep, furrowed and permanent over time. This is one of the more visible signs of aging. While we may not see these changes immediately in our youth, they can eventually become noticeable in deep lines and wrinkles as we age. The areas that show the most signs of aging are around the forehead, eyes, and mouth where our muscles are most actively used to express our emotions.
his is a naturally occurring part of aging, but it can often cause men and women alike to feel self-conscious and insecure about how they look. The most common concern we hear at Hush Beauty MD is that our clients feel the lines make them look tired, angry or confused. Most people don’t mind owning the age they are, but it is the negative expressions etched in a seasoned face that bothers them the most.
Well fret no more! The good news is there are plenty of non-invasive and minimally invasive options available to help you achieve a more youthful look without surgery – one of those being Botox injections.

Botox Vancouver: What is Botox® made from?
Botox® belongs to a group of drugs known as neuromodulators . It is one of the most well-known neuromodulators available and is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A. Fermentation of the bacteria clostridium botulinum type A produces this neuromodulator, commonly referred to by its brand name, but also recognized by its generic name, onabotulinumtoxinA.
Once injected into the skin, this strain of botulinum toxin acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent that temporarily paralyzes the targeted muscles. This allows the muscles to relax, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in and around the injection site.
Botox Vancouver: Are Botox Injections Right For You?

Here are a few things to consider before you make your decision:
Botox Vancouver: Is Botox Safe?
As with any medical procedure, risks and benefits always need to be considered. However, when performed by a trained and licensed physician, such as Dr. Rose Wong and her team at Hush Beauty MD, Anti-Aging and Skin Care Centre, the chances of any serious complications are very low. Possible side effects of Botox injections include:
- Bruising
- Headache/Flu-Like symptoms
- Pain at the injection site
- Swelling at and around the injection site
While these are the most common side effects, they are temporary and should subside within a few days. However, there are other risks associated with Botox injections that need to be considered, including:
- Allergic reactions (leading to trouble speaking, swallowing, and breathing)
- Muscle weakness
- Vision problems
While rare, these side effects can occur and should not be taken lightly. Before considering Botox injections, you’ll want to make sure that you and your physician go over all the possible risks and complications to ensure that you are a good candidate for Botox injections.
Botox Vancouver: Who Is Best Suited for Botox Injections?
If you’re still undecided about whether Botox injections are suitable for you, it’s essential to contemplate your individual goals, concerns, as well as your overall health and well-being.
Since Botox injections have potential side effects and risks, you must speak with your physician to ensure that you are a good candidate. Generally speaking, those who are good candidates for Botox injections are those who:
- Are overall healthy
- Do not have an aversion to needles
- Have no prior knowledge of allergic reactions to neurotoxin injection or any of its components
- Have realistic expectations of what can be accomplished through neurotoxin injections
- Have tried other anti-aging treatments, such as dermal fillers, and would like to augment the results that they got
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
If you are considering Botox injections, consulting a board-certified physician with experience performing this procedure is essential. During your consultation, your physician will evaluate your individual goals and concerns while also going over your complete health history to help you determine if Botox injections are the right option.
Botox Vancouver:What to Expect Before, During and After Your Botox Treatment
After you’ve had a consultation about receiving Botox injections, there are a few things that you can expect to happen next:
Before Your Botox Treatment
There are a few things that you can do to prepare for your Botox treatment. Your doctor will give you instructions to help ensure you have a safe and comfortable experience. These may include:
- Avoid drinking alcohol
- Avoid taking certain supplements like Omega 3 or fish oil for 5 days
- Cleanse your face thoroughly before arrival
During Your Botox Treatment
Your doctor will begin cleansing your face when it’s time for your treatment. After preparing the skin, the practitioner will use a small needle to inject the neurotoxin into the target area. While most patients report little to no sensation, you might feel a slight pinch or sting as the needle penetrates the skin
The injection itself lasts only seconds, and you might receive an icepack to alleviate any discomfort. The appointment’s duration typically ranges from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.
After Your Botox Treatment
After your Botox treatment, it’s normal to experience some redness and swelling at the injection site. This should subside within a few hours.
You’ll also be given aftercare instructions by your doctor, such as keeping the injection site clean and avoiding direct sunlight and other direct heat sources. It is also really important to not apply pressure around the treated areas for the next few days. Generally things to avoid would be strenuous physical activities for 24-48 hours, no saunas, hot tubs or massages for 2 weeks post procedure. You will also be advised to avoid all other anti-aging treatments like Hydrafacials and lasers for 2 weeks after the treatment.
Make sure you’re following these instructions to ensure optimal results.
Most patients notice results within two weeks, and the effects will continue to improve over time. While you may only require a single treatment to see results, you will need to schedule follow-up treatments every 3-4 months to help maintain your results.
Botox Vancouver: What is the difference between Botox and Fillers?
Firstly they are made of different materials, have different consistency and serve a different purpose. Botox comes in a clear liquid injectable form whereas fillers are made of biocompatible clear gel like material. Botox is injected into muscles to relax them, while fillers are injected under the skin to replace lost volume. Therefore it is most ideal to use Botox to soften expression lines, while fillers is great for replacing lost collagen/soft tissue. Areas most suitable for fillers would be under eye hollows, sunken cheeks, deep nasolabial folds, receding chin, jawline and lips
Some Botox Fun Facts
Do you know that Botox was first pioneered for cosmetic use in Vancouver BC?
Dr. Jean Carruthers, an ophthalmologist in Vancouver, first used Botox for cosmetic purposes in 1987. She and her late husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers, were pioneers in discovering the wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox. They initially used it to treat medical conditions like eye muscle spasms, a condition causing facial muscle spasms that force eyelids shut, starting in 1983. While doing that, it produced an unexpected bonus of softening the lines around the eyes. This led them to explore its potential for cosmetic use, with Dr. Alastair Carruthers famously injecting his wife, Dr. Jean, to demonstrate its safety and effectiveness, inspiring her saying, "I haven't frowned since 1987".

It is best to not do any vigorous activity for the next 24 hours. It is also strongly advised that you do not apply pressure to the injected sites. That means no lying face down for massages, or getting other treatments done like facials, saunas, hot tubs, laser or microneedling for at least 2 weeks after the treatment.
How many injections will I need?
The injection points will depend on the areas treated, for e.g. the frown lines will usually need about 5 injection points. However, that has nothing to do with the amount of Botox which is needed. Botox is quantified in units, and if the dilution of the bottle makes up to 100 units, then you will usually need between 10-30 units in the frown lines.
How much does Botox cost?
The cost will vary depending on the quantity of Botox used i.e. the units required to treat you. The cost for 1 unit usually range from $10-$20.
How many units of Botox do I need?
This varies on a wide range. It all depends on which area you need treatment for, the purpose of treatment, the desired outcome you want. As a general rule, the bigger the muscle, the more is needed. To treat the frown muscles you usually need 20units, but the masseters for jaw clenching will need about 60 units. As a general rule, if you are only doing face rejuvenation for expression lines, and you are between 20-30 years old, you generally will need 20-30 units. Adding 10-20 units for every decade gain seems to be the norm.
When is a good age to start Botox?
You can use Botox in your teens if it is for a therapeutic purpose like jaw clenching. Most anti-aging injections will start after 30 years of age. There are always exceptions to this. If you are someone that has strong frown lines and want preventative treatment to prevent the wrinkles from forming, you can start Botox in your 20’s.
Will I look frozen with Botox?
The frozen look comes from excessive quantity used and you are no longer able to show appropriate expressions on your face. This is easily managed by discussing with your doctor the need to still look natural and not done. It is important to find an experienced injector with aesthetic discernment that can give you the desired outcome.
How do I find a good injector I can trust?
The clinic you go to should be able to offer you a direct consultation with the doctor, who is fully licensed and certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
It is essential that you are able to read up about the treatments you are interested in, on their website. You should also read the google reviews they get from their patients.
